Nova is open source software for the peer to peer (P2P) sharing of files which is a general purpose media player for file sharing. It is perfectly suited for the sharing of large data files (e.g. dvd images). In addition, Nova allows for search for a file, copying files to the local system and the network, and the monitoring of the current torrents and their evolution.
It is possible to add a list of sharers from an external database (e.g. NeoMutt). This is suitable when you want to avoid getting kicked out of a server at the same time that you are getting a lot of data and are unable to start sharing immediately.
Nova differs from other P2P software by its hybrid search and download functionality. For example, if Nova is idle, then it will look for new sources automatically, download these and then start searching for files. Nova is a UI designer’s dream. You can visually create and destroy client and server “tables” from which users download and share files. Nova can also show previews of partially downloaded files by using the media player which you like and optionally customise the size of the window and the speed at which it plays. Nova can also access various sources of online content which include Yahoo News Feeds, sports coverage, music and videos.
Nova can auto-upgrade to share with any version of TigerTree and is fully compatible with the latest version of GreenTorrent, which allows it to communicate with both kinds of file sharing system in parallel. If you want to search with a different P2P network it is possible to run Nova as a background task and automatically start a search when a network change is detected. This may be useful for if you have no network connection (e.g. at work).
Finally, Nova is an extensible engine which allows you to develop your own plug-ins to add custom functionality to it. One very simple open source graphical interface to share files with the Gnutella network.
File sharing on Gnutella is really easy, if you know what your doing you can use it.
The simplest way of enabling file sharing on Gnutella is to “gksudo gnettotray -R” before starting Nova.
Nova has a sperate out of the way menu where you can change stuff to make Nova look the way you want it to.
It is your responsibility to download files and sort them before uploading.
The reaons behind why we allow uploads are because files are posted to the network by people in a better position to do so.
Our job is to make sure that Nova works 100% so we cant put in any half finished or time wasting code.
Searching on Gnutella is quite easy, just use “grep” or a sophisticated script.
For maximum use of the network you should check “grep” before searching with Nova.
Just like with file sharing on the internet, if you run up against an unpredictable end user you will do well to attempt to take control of them.
All of Nova’s configuration is in a file called “nova.conf”.
Files are considered to be “searchable” if they:
