AutoCAD was one of the first successful CAD packages, with users like Gary Kildall, founder of the Kildall-owned SoftKey, having selected it as the CAD software of choice. The software, developed at Stanford University, was written in “C” and Object Pascal, and sold for $8,000. A few years later, the same company made a new version for Apple Computer. In 1988, Stanford released the next version for both Apple II and PC, AutoLISP, which became the third-most-used programming language of the time.
AutoCAD continued to be used by several companies, including John Deere, Intel, Boeing, Boeing Nordell, Böhler, and Siemens. In 1992, the software was introduced to the mass market, when its beta version was released as Personal Edition. The company later renamed Personal Edition to AutoCAD R16. The same year, AutoCAD became available for the Microsoft Windows platform.
The software, like other CAD programs, was always presented as intended to be used by architects and engineers, though it has been used for other purposes, including animated maps for Google Maps. In 1993, the software was integrated with AutoCAD Type, an AutoLISP language used for data types and auto numbering (indentation of a number as part of the numbering).

In October, Denmark’s Eindhoven University of Technology opened a fully functional 3D-printed cup capable of delivering coffee to its customers. However, it wasn’t just any coffee; it was the sort that you only get at a fine cafe. “Our aim is not to replicate the experience of sitting at a coffee shop, but rather to give people the chance to consume coffee in a variety of ways,” the institute’s Jarle Følling told The Guardian.
The idea of 3D printing coffee is not a new one. Last year, a report from the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) said that the market for 3D printing and food is set to grow by 50 percent in the next five years. But Eindhoven’s cups are the first to be fully functional, offering no drip and fully airtight. The cups, which cost $10,000, or £7,000, feature a hollowed-out part of a paper cup. A computer is used to extrude a silicon-based wax through the paper, creating the foam layer that takes the place of the coffee in the cup. The wax is then cooled and the two halves of the paper cup are secured together. It’s a pretty spectacular way to avoid sipping on a super-hot cup of joe.
